Good to know for your case
This test gives general guidance and does not replace a clinical examination. Only a consultation at the clinic can confirm the right treatment.
Slightly yellow teeth, a chipped tooth, a smile you hide in photos… Before talking about veneers, the real question is: what exactly bothers you? Depending on the answer, the best solution is not always the most dramatic one, and sometimes a much simpler option is enough.
In this guide, Dr. Reda Saoui compares the three most requested cosmetic treatments, answers the questions people ask before going ahead, and helps you work out whether veneers are right for you. Start with the test above, then read the full guide.
The comparison at a glance
| Whitening | Ceramic veneers | Crowns | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it fixes | Colour only | Colour, shape, size, minor alignment issues | A damaged, weakened or heavily restored tooth |
| Tooth preparation | None | Minimal (0.3–0.5 mm of enamel), sometimes none | More: the whole tooth is covered |
| Number of visits | 1 session | 2–3 visits | Usually 2 visits |
| How long it lasts | 1–3 years, with maintenance | 10–15 years or more | 10–15 years or more |
| Reversible? | Yes, the shade changes naturally over time | No, if enamel is prepared | No |
| Investment | Lowest | Highest (per tooth) | High (per tooth) |
These are averages: the condition of your teeth and gums, and your goals, decide the best option.
Which solution for which problem?
Healthy but dull teeth: start with whitening
If only the shade bothers you, Fläsh teeth whitening lightens your teeth by several shades in one session, without touching them. It is the simplest, gentlest and most affordable option. It does not change the shape of your teeth, and it has no effect on existing crowns or veneers, which keep their original shade.
Shape, size, small teeth, gaps or chips: veneers
Dental veneers are thin shells of ceramic bonded to the front of your teeth. They correct colour, shape and minor alignment issues at the same time, for a harmonious, natural smile. Ceramic does not stain and lasts for many years.
Composite veneers, sculpted directly in the mouth, are a more affordable alternative for small corrections, but they stain more easily and do not last as long.
A badly damaged or weakened tooth: a crown
When a tooth is broken, heavily decayed, root-treated or already covered with large fillings, a veneer cannot protect it. A crown covers it completely and restores its strength, with the same aesthetic quality in ceramic or zirconia. Veneers and crowns can be combined in the same smile with a carefully matched shade.
Crooked teeth: straighten first
Veneers can disguise a slight misalignment, but for teeth that are really out of position, a lot of enamel would have to be removed. Clear aligners move the teeth into place first; then we decide whether veneers are still useful. Often fewer, thinner veneers are needed.
The questions people ask before going ahead
“Will my teeth be filed down?”
Very little. For ceramic veneers we usually remove 0.3–0.5 mm of enamel, about the thickness of a fingernail. In some cases ultra-thin veneers can even be bonded with no preparation at all. Smile Design shows exactly where we need to work, and where we don’t.
“Does it hurt?”
Not during treatment: preparation is done under a light local anaesthetic, and fitting itself does not hurt. You may notice slight sensitivity to hot and cold for a few days, which then disappears.
“Will they look fake, or too white?”
This is the most common worry, and a fair one. A “fake” look almost always comes from veneers that are too thick, too long or too uniform in shade. With Smile Design the shape is designed for your face, and the mock-up lets you try your future smile in your mouth before any treatment. You choose the shade: natural or brighter, it is your decision.
“How long do veneers last?”
With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, ceramic veneers last 10–15 years, often longer. Composite veneers need more frequent maintenance and do not last as long.
“Is it reversible?”
To be honest: once enamel has been prepared, even very slightly, you cannot go back to the original tooth. A veneer can be redone, but not removed without being replaced. That is why we have you approve the result as a mock-up before we start, and why we favour the most conservative techniques.
“Can I eat normally? Will they stain?”
Yes, you eat normally: just avoid biting very hard objects (pens, shells, ice cubes). High-quality ceramic is non-porous, so it does not stain with coffee, tea or tobacco.
Are veneers right for me?
Most adults who want to improve the shape or colour of their teeth can have veneers. A few conditions matter for a beautiful result that lasts:
- Healthy gums: any inflammation must be treated first, otherwise the veneer edges will look less clean.
- No cavities or pending treatment: dental health always comes before aesthetics.
- Enough enamel: veneers bond to enamel; a badly damaged tooth is better protected by a crown.
- Teeth grinding does not rule veneers out, but a night guard becomes essential.
- Well-positioned teeth, or teeth straightened first with aligners.
- Shared expectations: that is the whole point of the simulation and the mock-up.
At your consultation, Dr. Saoui photographs your smile, analyses your face, checks the health of your teeth and gums, then presents the possible options (whitening, veneers, crowns or a combination), with a plan and a detailed quote. To go further, read our complete guide to veneers in Tangier.
